Costco, known for its bulk discounts, membership benefits, and unique products, is changing in 2025. If you’re a member – or thinking of becoming one – it’s important to be aware of these upcoming changes and how they might affect your shopping experience. Costco has made changes in the past that had customers up in arms (like raising prices on certain food court items). That said, here’s a look at the five major changes happening in the coming year at the warehouse retailer.

1. Cracking Down on Membership Sharing

Costco, similar to Netflix, is tightening its membership-sharing policies. Historically, the store allowed household members to share a single membership card. However, to ensure only registered members use the card, Costco is introducing new technology to verify your membership. This change aims to maintain fairness and stable membership prices, though it may not be popular with all customers.

The retailer released a statement on its website and wrote, “Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse. Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.” Individuals who want to renew their membership or sign up for a membership will be directed to customer service before they can walk around the store.

2. The End of the Book Section

Bibliophiles may be disappointed to learn that Costco is phasing out its book section in 2025. Despite offering incredible discounts on popular titles, declining sales are one reason for the extinction of the book section. Alongside that, a rise in digital books has led Costco to reprioritize the store space. The book section will be replaced by tech gadgets or seasonal goods, which have shown stronger demand. Books will not go away entirely though. The retailer has shared that books will reappear on shelves during the holiday season from September to December. This change is expected to take place in January 2025.

3. Expanded Organic and Sustainable Offerings

Costco is responding to growing consumer demand for sustainable products by expanding its range of organic food, eco-friendly cleaning supplies, and reusable packaging in 2025. The company has always done what it could to support local farmers and encourage sustainability. In fact, it was one of few retailers that weren’t as heavily impacted by supply chain issues during the pandemic for this reason. Honing in on this initiative in 2025 reflects the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and meeting the needs of health-conscious consumers. It is one of the welcomed changes at Costco.

4. Higher Membership Fees

One of the more controversial changes expected in 2025 deals with Costco’s membership fee. It is expected to go up slightly. Gold Star memberships will increase from $60 to $65, and Executive memberships will go up from $120 to $130 annually. This comes as a shock because Costco hasn’t raised membership prices since 2017. However, inflation and operational costs have made an adjustment inevitable.

The change was actually in effect on September 1, 2024, but next year will be the first full calendar year with the new membership prices. While this increase may deter some, Costco assures members that the value of their savings will still far outweigh the cost. Also, if you spring for the Executive membership, your 2% cash back maximum reward will increase this year as well from $1,000 to $1,250. So, it’s clear the retailer is only making this change to benefit customers.

5. Enhanced Digital Shopping Experience

Costco is enhancing its digital shopping platform with new features. To embrace and keep up in this digital age, they are working on streamlined navigation, personalized recommendations, and faster delivery options in 2025. The main changes being made to the website and the Costco app include:

  • Digital membership cards: The Costco app will now include digital membership cards, which you can scan at the entrance.
  • Shopping list management: The app will now have a feature where you can manage lists for the store.
  • Real-time inventory: You’ll be able to check the inventory status on your favorite items and see if things are in stock before you make a Costco trip.
  • Pickup options: Customers will be able to buy online and pick up in-store starting in 2025.

The platform will also offer exclusive online-only deals to attract members and provide a convenient alternative for busy shoppers.

Making Changes to Improve Customer Experience

Costco is dedicated to evolving with the market while maintaining its value proposition to members. The company’s 2025 changes, which include enhanced digital experiences and stricter membership requirements, are a testament to this commitment. While these changes may bring a mix of positive and negative reactions, staying informed and adapting your shopping habits will ensure you continue to enjoy the numerous advantages of being a Costco member.
