The digital coupon has taken the coupon game to the next level.

Triple stacking coupons means adding a digital coupon to your checkout process, and combining it with paper and printable coupons for massive savings.

Of course, every business wants to get as much money out of you as they can. That’s why there aren’t a lot of stores that offer triple coupons.

Don’t worry; we’ve got the information that you need. Here are the top places where you can triple stack coupons in California. Plus, find additional tips for getting a third discount on double stacked coupons.

What Does It Mean to Triple Stack Coupons?

Triple stacking coupons is when you combine three coupons to save extreme amounts on one item. The three coupons you will likely stack are:

1. Paper Coupons

These are the manufacturer coupons. In other words, they’re the coupons you clip from newspapers and circulars.

2. Printable Coupons

If you’re on top of your coupon game, you probably also print coupons at home. These are also called store coupons. You may also receive them from the cashier. For example, Target and Walgreens give printable coupons with your receipt.

Find a printable coupon to match your paper coupon. Combine them to double-stack your coupons.

3. Digital Coupons

The third coupon is the digital coupon. Unlike the printable coupon, you never print it out. Instead, you download it to your smartphone. You “digitally clip” the coupon, often to your store loyalty card, then the cashier includes it at checkout.

1. Target

Make sure to download the Target app, where you’ll find Cartwheel, which is a roundup of the current in-store offers. Target users are always allowed to combine Cartwheel deals with one manufacturer coupon and one additional Target coupon.

There are some limitations including:

  • Limit of 4 identical coupons per household per day
  • Manufacturer coupons must be printed, not on your phone
  • Does not apply to BOGO coupons

Despite these limitations, Target is one of your best options for triple stacking coupons in California. If you purchase groceries at Target, be sure to use all available coupons to save money.

2. Rite Aid

To understand triple-stacking at Rite Aid, you need to understand their coupon types. Specifically, you need to read coupon UPC codes. Look for the number at the start of the UPC code for the following:

  • Starts with 5. This is a manufacturer coupon.
  • Starts with 49. This is a Rite Aid manufacturer coupon.
  • Starts with 48. This is a Rite Aid “Valuable Coupon”.

You are allowed to stack one of each type of coupon on the same item. They accept printable coupons, digital coupons and “total off purchase” coupons as well.

3. Raley’s

As an avid couponer, you may have heard of the Raley’s chain. That’s because their Elk Grove location was featured on the TLC TV show “Extreme Couponing”. Sign up for their Something Extra card. Combine the cash back and deals from this card with manufacturer and store coupons.

4. CVS

Sign up for “ExtraBucks” at CVS. This gives you 2% back on all transactions. You also receive access to special deals. Combine your ExtraBucks savings with one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon for triple savings.

Additionally, CVS allows you to combine multiple $ off coupons in one transaction. For example, let’s say you have two coupons that are each to get $2 off a purchase of $10 or more. You can use them both to get $4 off if you spend at least $20 in total.

5. Walgreens

Similar to CVS, Walgreens offers store loyalty savings and cash back with their app. These can be combined with manufacturer and store coupons.  Walgreens also offers register rewards for dollars off your next purchase.

One extra thing to look for at Walgreens is “total store offers”. These are special days, such as Military Day, when groups of people get discounts on all items. These discounts are in addition to coupons. One limitation is that you can’t combine BOGO coupons with total store offers.

6. Mollie Stone’s Markets

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, then you might shop at Mollie Stone’s Markets. They recently teamed up with the Chinook Book app. This adds a new set of mobile coupons to their offers.

Each Mollie Stone’s location has weekly ad discounts. Stack these with manufacturer coupons.

7. Whole Foods: One to Keep an Eye On

Whole Foods is one of the most popular grocery stores in California. Subscribe to The Whole Deal guide to get deals sent to your inbox. These can be combined with manufacturer and store coupons.

Unfortunately, Whole Foods just canceled their digital coupons program, which added extra savings. However, they have announced that something new is coming in its place. It looks like it will be combined with Amazon Prime deals. So, this is a store worth keeping an eye on if you’re already a Prime member.

Tip: Alternatives to the Third Coupon

It’s tough to triple stack coupons in California. However, there are other ways that you can get a third discount on double-stacked coupons.

One smart tip is to use third party apps that allow you to get cash back on your purchases. For example, you can use iBotta to get rebates on items that you’ve already purchased. First, purchase an item in-store with double-stacked coupons. Then add an iBotta rebate for a further discount.

Similarly, you can use a discounted gift card for extra savings. Purchase the gift card at the discounted price. Use the gift card to pay for an item, which you’ve discounted with double-stacking.

These aren’t traditional methods of triple stacking coupons. However, they are good options when you can’t find that third digital coupon to use at the time of purchase. This is especially helpful to remember at stores that allow double-stacking but not triple stacking. Examples of such stores in California include Smart & Final and Stater Bros.

All of these are great deals for people who want to triple stack coupons. However, it’s important to be aware of limitations on coupon stacking. Check out our guide to Common Grocery Coupon Policies to learn more.
