The holiday season can be stressful. What’s even more stressful is forgetting something essential you need on Christmas day. From batteries and gifts to food items, where are you going to pick up what you need? With this question in mind, it’s good to know which grocery stores are open on Christmas Day. Here’s a guide to help you find stores ready to serve you in 2025.

Are There Any Grocery Stores Open?

Unfortunately, many of the grocery stores near my home are not open on Christmas Day. Those stores include Walmart, Publix, Kroger, and Aldi. All of them have modified holiday hours for Christmas Eve. However, on Christmas, they are all closed with no limited opening schedule available that day. That said, there are alternative stores that serve the same emergency purposes and can assist you.

1. 7-Eleven

7-Eleven is a popular gas station known for its 24/7 service and fantastic slushies and food options. This convenience store is often a reliable choice on Christmas Day when not much else is open. Keep in mind, that the store is not a full-service grocery store, but you can find essentials like milk, snacks, and beverages. This is especially helpful if you are on the road Christmas Day or find yourself missing an ingredient for your Christmas feast that you might be able to find at the 7-Eleven.

2. Albertsons

Albertsons is one of the only grocery store chains I could find with some opening hours on Christmas. While most Albertsons will be closed, a few select locations may remain open on Christmas Day. Operating hours are often reduced between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. in open locations, so plan your visit early. Contact your nearest store to confirm holiday hours if you plan to visit on Christmas Day.

3. CVS and Walgreens

While the grocery store is probably closed, pharmacy chains are likely to remain open on the Christmas holiday. Two of these options are CVS and Walgreens. CVS stores that remain open will operate between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. while Walgreens will operate between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The good thing is that both stores carry essential items like batteries, toys, gifts, and food. You can find gift sets and even meat to help round out your Christmas dinner if needed. I enjoy shopping at Walgreens the most because they have great shopping options and the sales associates are always friendly.

4. Local Convenience Stores

One other faithful place you can stop and shop is your local convenience store. When everything else is closed, they are sure to be open right alongside the old faithful Waffle House. This is especially true for independent or regional convenience stores. These stores might carry limited groceries but are perfect for emergency purchases. Be aware that convenience stores typically have higher prices as well, so factor that into your decision. Of course, it’s always a good idea to call ahead to make sure the store is open before heading out.

Christmas Day can be stressful if you forget something and need to run to the store. While you’ll need to check local store hours in advance, there are some limited options available. Knowing which stores are open can save your holiday plans and keep you stress-free.
